I have an ICOM 746 so I can make it semi-portable but the antenna must also be portable. I'm not stuck on using 2 meters, just need advice on the best way to do this when we both get our licenses and are ready. I could set her up with a 25 watt 2 meter mobile in her backpack, powered by a 12 volt lithium battery if needed. ![]() Problem is, it seems like she's too far for VHF and too close for HF. I was thinking of using one of the Yaesu mobile HF radios but worried that the "skip" might go right past her since she's so close. ![]() and if I use an antenna launcher over a tree, I could probably gain another 25 to 30 feet beyond that. She's in a suburban environment, I'm in a rural environment, but I have the luxury of a hill top near my home (one of the highest elevations around the local area) that puts me almost 200 feet above her location. My wife and I are trying to figure out a way to have emergency communications over a distance of about 20 miles. Which would provide better transmit and receive, a quality whip like the Diamond RH77CA or a roll up antenna like an MFJ-1730 or home made version? ![]() A few minutes of setup time for the roll up antenna is not a problem. ![]() Total mobility (walking while talking) is not an issue but it does need to fit into a backpack. I'm considering the purchase of an antenna for a HT 2 meter radio (FT60R).
